Russian State Duma (parliament) has in first reading approved a new law concerning the personal data of Russian citizens. One of the provisions of the law orders all internet companies to store private data of Russian citizens on the territory of Russian Federation. If passed in the further readings, the law will oblige the Russian censorship service Roskomnazdor (The Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media) to block such services on the territory of Russia. Such measure would be unrealizable for many online services such as Facebook who operate vast databases of interlinked user’s data and would give Russian security services full and unrestricted access to such data.
