Security researchers from University of Berkeley and Intel labs published a paper summarizing their work on analysis of HTTPS traffic. They used web crawlers to map several websites using HTTPS ranging from medical and financial services to video portals. By analyzing the traffic from the server to the user they were able to determine which webpage the user visited despite the encryption. They reached success rate of almost 90%. Although the researchers admit that in less ideal conditions (with user using different browsers, devices and operating systems) the success rate may drop significantly, their results bring an important insight into the privacy of HTTPS traffic.
