June 6, 2014

Cisco reported on massive spreading of a new type of crypto ransomware Cryptowall. It uses a new exploit kit called RIG discovered in May 2014 by Kahu Security. RIG uses exploits for known vulnerabilities in Flash, Java, Silverlight and Internet Explorer. Cisco believes that malvertising on legitimate sites is behind the rapid spread of the malware. Infected users are required to pay up to 600 USD in bitcoins to get back access to their files.
