January 23, 2014

Chinese users suffered from a huge internet outage on Tuseday January 21. They could not access any web servers not hosted on the national top level domain .cn for up to eight hours. The traffic was rerouted to servers of several American companies that are usually blocked by the so called „Great Firewall of China“. Chinese authorities suspected hacking of DNS servers since one of the servers belonged to company Dynamic Internet Technology (DIT) that is associated with the religious movement Falun Gong. However, most experts believe that the outage was result of error in setting of the Chinese censorship mechanism in its root domain name servers.
