Details of the malware used in the Target attack

Brian Krebs has published details on the malware that was used to infect point-of-sale terminals during the attack on Target retail store chain in December 2013. The malware was apparently able to access data stored briefly in the RAM of the point-of-sale machines once the card has been swiped through it and send it to a server in the Target network controlled by the attacker. The malware seems to be in wild at least since summer 2013 but none of the commercial anti-virus programs was able to detect it as of the time of the Target attack. Brian Krebs was also able to track the malware creator to the Russian-Ukrainian hacker group.
