While the news of NSA tracking hundreds of thousands computer systems by implanting spyware was revealed earlier as shown in the documents leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, the New York Times now informs that the NSA has also means to gather information from computers not connected to the net. Gathering data requires physical access to the computer and planting a tiny circuit capable of radio communication. The data is then retrieved by a field station that may be located up to eight miles away from the targeted system.

NYT also brings more detailed description of deployment of the Quantum system used to spy on network connected computers. Its primal targets are currently Chinese and Russian military, entities in Mexico as well as institutions in India, Pakistan and EU.
