Two researchers, Andrew Huang and Sean Cross have demonstrated vulnerabilities of flash memory SD cards at Chaos Communication Congress in Hamburg. The exploit uses micro controller chip embedded into falsh memory devices to avoid saving data to corrupt sectors of the memory. Such micro controllers often contain unsecured ability to update its firmware. This function may be used to access any data stored on the card or execute malicious code. Althouhgh the vulanerability has been demonstrated on the case of SD cards it may affect also other types of flash memories such as USB discs, smartphone and tablet memory of SSD discs of computers.
