Attack on ATMs via text message

Symantec has reported that a new variant of ATM malware Backdoor.Plotus is capable of money withdrawal from the affected ATM via SMS. In this case, the attacker needs not only to install malware to the ATM but also attach a cell phone to it’s USB port. That requires access to the inside of the ATM but not to the security money compartment. Any cash withdrawal can be later initiated simply by sending SMS. This new method is much more advantages for the criminal because it allows to use money mules to get the money while the operation (including the amount withdrawn) can be controlled remotely.
