American and British spy agencies targeted anti-virus companies to gather information about their users and products as revealed by the latest batch of Snowden documents. One of the primary targets was apparently Russian company Kaspersky Labs that was targeted by the GCHQ to reverse engineer its software and by NSA to track its users. Other anti-virus companies were subject of the NSA’s operation CAMBERDADA, that aimed at intercepting of e-mails with malware reporting to various anti-virus companies. That would allow NSA to established whether some of their operation may be discovered by the security companies, repurpose the malware or track its creators to find out whether they are involved in other activities such as cyber espionage.
