U.S. Freedom Act approved and signed

President Obama has signed the U.S. Freedom Act following its approval by the Senate. Thus ended the two-day period without anybody collecting metadata of Americans’ phone calls after the validity of Section 215 of the Patriot Act expired. The Freedom Act stipulates that the metadata will be collected by the telecom operators and governmental agencies would gain access to the based on a specific court order. The NSA and operators have six months to implement the new system. Senate voting means a significant defeat of the leader od republican majority Mitch Connell who wanted longer transitional period and stricter rules for operators on data retention.
